When it comes to men’s style, bags are often an afterthought—but they shouldn’t be.

A good bag does more than carry your stuff. It’s a finishing touch, a reflection of your personality, and an extension of your style. Whether you’re commuting, traveling, or just out and about, the right bag can elevate your entire look.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through some of the best bags for men—from briefcases to backpacks—and help you figure out what works best for your lifestyle, wardrobe, and needs.

Work Bags: Make the Right First Impression

Your work bag is typically the first thing people notice when you walk into a meeting or the office. It should match your environment, suit your style, and ideally, make you feel a little more put-together.

Here are your top choices:

Image: Palissy briefcase by Carl Friedrik

1. The Briefcase: Timeless and Sharp

If you’re working in a formal or corporate setting, a leather briefcase still sets the standard. It says, “I mean business,” in the best possible way.

If you go for a high-quality briefcase, ideally made from full-grain or vegetable-tanned leather, it’s one of the best bags for men —it ages beautifully and holds up well over time. Stay away from cheap polyester or flimsy faux leather versions; they tend to look dated fast.

One of my favorites is the Palissy briefcase from Carl Friedrik – a beautiful, minimal bag that feels incredibly well-made (because it is). It works great for meetings and still feels contemporary.

Pros:

Professional and clean

Great for meetings and formal offices

Durable (if you invest in quality)

Cons:

Limited space

Too formal for casual outfits

Image: satchel bag by Bleu de chauffe

2. The Messenger Bag: Smart-Casual and Easy to Wear

Perfect for creative workplaces or casual office environments, a messenger bag gives you flexibility and quick access on the go.

They usually come in leather or canvas. Leather adds polish, while canvas feels more relaxed. I’ve used one from Bleu de chauffe on a trip to Berlin, and it handled everything—camera, water bottle, notebook—while still looking sharp.

Keep in mind:

Long-term wear on one shoulder can affect posture

Not ideal for pairing with tailored jackets

Ready to upgrade your style?

Receive weekly style tips, outfit ideas and menswear insights.

The form can be filled in the actual website url.

3. The Portfolio or Clutch: Sleek and Minimal

If you only need to carry a few documents, a small tablet, or business cards, a portfolio (or clutch bag) is a sleek alternative. No straps, no bulk. Just grab and go.

Best used for short walks between meetings or when you don’t need much. Think of it as your “accessory bag” rather than an everyday carry.

Image: Weekender by Bleu de chauffe

Travel Bags: Function Meets Style

Weekend trips, work travel, or gym runs call for something roomy yet stylish. Here’s what’s worth considering:

1. The Weekender: Stylish Getaway Essential

The weekender is your go-to for overnight trips. It’s spacious, often made from leather or canvas, and adds a grown-up vibe to your travel kit.

Want to pair it with a blazer or coat? Choose something minimal in smooth leather. Going more casual? A canvas version works well. I’ve been loving the Grain Leather Weekender from Bleu de chauffe —versatile, sleek, and surprisingly roomy.

Watch out for:

They can get heavy fast

No wheels means carrying it the whole way

Image: duffle bag by Bleu de chauffe

2. The Duffle: Rugged and Practical

The gym bag’s cooler cousin. Usually made from canvas or nylon, duffle bags are made to be tossed around and still look decent.

They’re ideal when you don’t want to risk scuffing up an expensive leather bag. Herschel makes great affordable options that are durable and stylish enough for daily use.

3. The Backpack: Smart if You Pick the Right One

Backpacks are practical but tricky to style. Many look too sporty or student-like to wear with a nice outfit. But if you find the right one—like a leather backpack from Frank Clegg—it can work.

They’re also great if you’re walking a lot or carrying heavier gear. Your back will thank you.

Image: tote bag by Bleu de chauffe

Everyday Bags: Keep It Effortless

Sometimes you just need something to toss your keys, book, and water bottle into without overthinking it. Enter the tote.

Tote Bags: Casual to Polished, Depending on the Material

Tote bags are one of the best casual bags for men. Canvas totes (like the iconic L.L. Bean) scream weekend vibes, while leather or suede ones can look refined enough for a casual office setting.

I’ve got a secondhand tote from Japan in a muted green that I wear constantly. It’s roomy, easy to carry, and looks great with jeans or linen pants.

Tips:

Look for internal compartments if you like staying organized

Adjustable or longer handles make a difference, especially if you’re on the shorter side

What to Look for in a Great Bag

Material Matters: Leather ages better and is more elegant, canvas is lighter and more casual, synthetics are cheaper but don’t last as long and look cheap.

Match Your Setting: Formal office? Choose leather. Weekend trip? Grab your duffle bag.

Comfort Counts: Don’t sacrifice your back for style—backpacks and padded straps can help.

Size and Storage: Only carry what you need. A bulky bag full of junk kills the vibe.

Double Duty: Bags with both handles and shoulder straps offer flexibility.

Brands to Check Out

If you’re in the market for a new bag, these brands hit a nice balance of style, quality, and variety:

Bleu de chauffe – Rugged, quality bags crafted in France – ideal for casual styles

Carl Friedrik – Sleek, modern leather pieces, perfect for professionals

Frank Clegg – Premium leather backpacks and totes, made in the USA

Herschel – Affordable, durable everyday bags

Beckett Simonon – Timeless leather goods without the designer markup

Nordform – Affordable, minimal leather bags

Filson – Rugged, classic bags for men

Final Thoughts

A good bag isn’t just something you carry—it’s part of your look. Whether you’re suited up for the boardroom or heading out for a coffee run, the right bag pulls everything together.

Invest in quality where it counts, pick something that fits your lifestyle, and don’t be afraid to let your personal taste guide you. After all, style is in the details.

What do you think are the best bags for men?

I’d love to hear what works for you.

Carry on (stylishly).

Struggling with business casual shoes? This guide breaks down the best shoe styles for men, from oxfords to sneakers. Discover how to dress confidently for the office!

Play

If you’re unsure about what shoes to wear for a business casual dress code, you’re not alone. If you struggle with figuring out the best business casual shoes for men, you’re not alone. The term itself is ambiguous and can mean a range of things depending on your industry, workplace, or even geographic region. Some companies are fine with jeans and sneakers; others expect slacks and leather shoes. So today, let’s shed some light on this often-confusing category and help you step into your workplace with confidence.

In this guide, we’ll rank six types of shoes from the most formal to the most casual business casual options. Whether you’re looking to upgrade your office wardrobe or simply trying to figure out what actually counts as “business casual” footwear, this post will have you covered.

But first, let’s define what we mean by “business casual.”

What Is Business Casual, Really?

Business casual is a dress code that sits somewhere between traditional corporate attire and casual streetwear. It generally means dressing professionally without wearing a full suit and tie. In some industries, that might mean wearing a button-down shirt and chinos instead of a suit. In others, it might be as casual as a T-shirt and jeans, provided they’re well-fitted and paired with the right shoes.

The key is to understand your office culture and adjust accordingly. If you’re unsure, err on the side of dressing up slightly more than you think you need to. A well-chosen pair of shoes can elevate even the most casual outfit.

Image: Black Oxford by Meermin

Oxfords and Derbies: The Most Formal Business Casual Shoe Options

Oxfords and Derbies are foundational to a smart wardrobe. They’re classic dress shoes that still hold a place in many business casual settings, particularly the more formal ones. Between the two, Oxfords are more formal due to their closed lacing system, while Derbies are slightly more relaxed with open lacing.

When to wear them: Save black Oxfords for your most formal business casual outfits—for example, when dressing down a full suit by removing the tie or wearing a pair of charcoal wool trousers with a navy sport coat.

Pro tip: To bring them more in line with a business casual aesthetic, opt for versions in suede or with broguing. These design elements soften the shoe’s formality and help bridge the gap between dressy and casual.

Best color choices: Dark brown and burgundy are your most versatile choices. They work well with navy, grey, olive, and tan clothing. Tan shoes, while stylish, often appear too light and attention-grabbing for a versatile business casual shoe.

Consider this: Good shoes are an investment. Unlike shirts or trousers, where you can sometimes get away with fast fashion, shoes reveal their quality very quickly. A well-made pair will serve you for years. Expect to spend at least $180 on quality leather shoes. Some great value-for-money brands include:

Beckett & Simonon

Meermin

Bridlen

If you’re working with a limited budget, the second-hand market is an excellent option. I’ve personally found high-end shoes in great condition for a fraction of the retail price.

Brown monkstraps by Meermin

Monk Straps: Adding a Unique Touch to Your Business Casual Look

If you’re looking for something a bit different while still maintaining a professional look, monk straps are a great choice. They’re less common than Oxfords or Derbies, which adds an element of individuality to your outfit.

Monk straps come in two varieties: single-monk and double-monk. The choice between the two really comes down to personal style. Double-monks tend to have a bolder look, while single-monks are a bit more understated.

What to wear them with: Wool trousers, chinos, or even dark, minimal jeans. Avoid overly distressed denim or casual fabrics.

Material matters: As with Oxfords and Derbies, suede monk straps lower the formality and work well for most business casual settings.

Color choices: Stick with dark brown or burgundy. Since monk straps already draw attention due to their unique design, choosing a bright or light color can make them stand out too much for a business setting.

A quick style note: Always wear socks with monk straps. A sockless look with this type of shoe tends to look mismatched, even in relaxed settings. No-show socks can work in warmer climates, but visible socks are generally a safer and more professional choice.

Brown penny loafers by Bridlen

Loafers: The Penny Loafer – A Business Casual Classic

Loafers are arguably the most versatile shoe on this list. They’re easy to slip on, comfortable, and stylish without being flashy. Within the loafer category, penny loafers are the most business casual-friendly.

Why penny loafers work: They strike a great balance between polish and ease. They’re less rigid than Oxfords but still look sharp enough for the office.

What to avoid: Stay away from horse-bit loafers, kilt loafers, or chunky fashion loafers. These lean too far into the casual or trend-focused side of the spectrum. Thick-soled loafers in particular don’t fit the clean lines of business casual attire.

Styling tip: Dark brown or burgundy leather is again your best bet. Penny loafers pair well with everything from tailored trousers to chinos and even slim, dark denim. They’re a great choice if you want one pair of shoes that can handle most business casual environments.

Chelsea boots by Bridlen

Dress Boots and Chelsea Boots: Cold-Weather Essentials

When fall and winter roll around, boots become not only practical but necessary. However, not all boots are created equal when it comes to business casual.

Best choices: Stick with Chelsea boots or refined dress boots. Both offer a sleek silhouette that pairs well with business casual clothing.

Design details to look for: A slightly elongated toe and slim profile generally look more formal. Compare that to a bulkier, round-toe boot with heavy soles, which leans too rugged for most office settings.

Material and sole: Thin rubber or leather soles keep the look clean and professional. Avoid thick treaded soles—they read too casual.

Other good options:

Chukka boots: Slightly more casual, but in suede or leather, they work great with jeans and chinos.

Jodhpur boots: Sleek and unique, these can work well in a more style-conscious office.

Rivera sneakers by Beckett Simonon

Sneakers: Minimalist Sneakers for Very Casual Work Environments

Sneakers are the most relaxed option on this list and should only be considered if your workplace has a very casual dress code. That said, not all sneakers are created equal.

What qualifies as business casual sneakers?

Low-profile

Leather, suede, or canvas material

Neutral colors (white, black, grey, navy)

Minimal branding

Avoid high tops, running shoes, basketball sneakers, or anything overly sporty. Think Common Projects or Beckett Simonon Rivera—not your gym shoes.

What to wear them with: Sneakers pair best with chinos, slim jeans, or casual wool trousers. Avoid wearing them with suits or overly formal pieces.

A traditionalist’s view: Call me old-fashioned, but I believe sneakers and suits don’t mix. If you’re going to wear a suit, elevate your shoes to match.

Final Thoughts: Invest Wisely, Dress Confidently

Gentlemen, those were six types of business casual shoes, ranked from formal to casual. The key to getting business casual right is understanding where your office falls on the spectrum and choosing footwear that aligns with that tone.

Let’s recap:

Oxfords & Derbies – Traditional and polished.

Monk Straps – Stylish with a twist.

Penny Loafers – Versatile and classic.

Chelsea & Dress Boots – Perfect for colder months.

Chukka & Jodhpur Boots – Slightly more relaxed.

Minimal Sneakers – Only for the most casual workplaces.

Which of these styles is your go-to for work? Let me know in the comments below.

Discover the only 3 belts any man needs. You really don't need more than these three essentials.

Why These 3 Belt Styles Are All You Need

Full disclaimer: Personally, I actually own a lot more than three belts. More than enough, really. Why take my advice, then? It’s a simple answer: because it is precisely for this abundance of choices that I have learnt what can be left out.

So, if you want to de-clutter – or upgrade – your wardrobe, these 3 belts are the bases you want to have covered. Stick around until the end and you will also find a neat little tip to always get the right size.

Classic Leather Belt: The Versatile Staple

The very first quality belt you want to buy is an all-time classic. Black or dark brown, full-leather construction, smooth to the touch and with a buckle that whispers rather than screams. Here are some examples to get the gist:

The first belt appears sophisticated due to its texture-free upper and small, polished buckle. The middle one is grained and therefore more casual. The last belt has a dark shade of brown with contrast stitching. They are all made by Timberland and have seen frequent use for over a year.

Now, many people preach that the belt should match the leather dress shoes. But honestly, they don’t have to match exactly. There’s enough space in between to show a little contrast. The same applies to their texture: you could wear a pair of smooth black leather dress shoes with the second belt, no problem. However, the width should not exceed 3,5cm / 1,37” if you plan to dress up.

As for the first pick, simply choose the color that goes best with the classic footwear you already own.

Braided Belt: Casual Chic for Business Casual

Over the years, these belts have grown to be my favorites. They exude an effortless, casual chic. They subtly stand out without being too “on the nose”. And on top of all that, their flexible construction and easy adjustability makes them perfectly comfortable.

The first belt is by Tommy Hilfiger. It’s got navy cotton inside. The second, chestnut-colored belt was a bargain at H&M – and punches way above its weight class.

Braided belts can be worn with any business casual outfit. In fact, they go well with pretty much anything. A cream-colored jeans will pair just as well as a mid-green chino or navy dress pant. The darker the hue, the easier the belt will be to combine.

Suede Belt: The Textured Touch for Fall and Winter

The last option you might consider is a belt in suede leather. These are excellent choices for fall / winter, as their textured appearance underscores the soft, cozy vibe of the season. They are usually quite bendable in construction, accounting for lots of comfort in the cool days.

I decided to pair this chocolate suede belt with other earthy colors.

Suede belts like these are perfect to wear with suede boots or loafers. Since its texture is so rich, you might even want to opt for a dark navy suede. This color still pairs well with dark footwear and feels fresh, yet understated.

Of course, you can also go the extra mile: This braided suede belt is one of my favorites.

With braided belts, it’s a good idea to size up. That way, you can tuck the end into a belt loop on the side, resulting in a very clean look.

Recommended brands

Sartolane

Beckett Simonon

Suitsupply

Portia1924

Berg & Berg

Howard London

Expert Tips for Choosing and Wearing Men’s Belts

The right length isn’t always easy to find. A braided belt certainly helps in this regard. But as a general rule, look out for belts with removable buckles. Often times, you’ll be able to unscrew the tip and adjust the length yourself. This is the case with the Timberland belts you saw above. All you need is a pair of punch pliers. It has worked wonders for me to size up when ordering, then adjusting the length myself.

Last, but not least: Always, always buy the shoes first, the belt second. If you spot a splendid belt on sale, but don’t see how it fits into your wardrobe, resist the temptation. It’s going to be a regrettable purchase. You don’t want to end up with an attractive dust trap like this:

I like this belt’s color but haven’t worn it once. Shame on me – but you can do better!

And with that being said: Have fun finding your next belt!

Thanks for reading.

Play

Getting the pant width and length right is crucial to dress your best.

If you wear trousers that are too slim, it can make your shoes look gigantic.

And if they are too wide or too long, it can also look a bit comical.

But how do you determine the right trouser width and length for you?

That’s the goal of today’s article.

I want to give you some practical guidelines so you can clearly see what trousers will look best on your body.

We’ll start with trouser width and then move on to the right length for your trousers.

The ideal pant width for 99% of men

The width of your pants primarily depends on two factors:

The shape of your body

The size of your feet

Personal taste and trouser style also play a role but are not as important as those two.

It’s actually quite simple:

The slimmer someone is, the slimmer the trousers can be, and the bigger someone is, the wider the trousers can and should be.

A slim guy with very wide trousers or a bigger guy with slim trousers both look a bit comical.

However, I think that most men, regardless of their body type, look best with a straight fit or a subtle taper.

A straighter cut is versatile, comfortable, and creates a well-balanced silhouette.

A very strong taper makes your hips appear wider and creates a v-shape in your lower body, which does not look very flattering, especially for bigger guys.

And I think no man should wear skinny-fit trousers.

Even though they were trendy for a while, they just never look flattering, no matter how slim or athletic you are.

The slimmest possible option that can still look good would be slim-fit.

Ready to upgrade your style?

Receive weekly style tips, outfit ideas and menswear insights.

The form can be filled in the actual website url.

Ideal pant width reference ranges

Let’s discuss some ranges so you have a reference:

If you’re a guy with a slim frame, you can go for slim or regular fit, and the leg opening should be somewhere in the range of 6.5 to 7.5 inches (ca. 19 cm).

For an average built guy, you can go for slim, regular, or straight fit, with a leg opening of 7 to 8.5 inches (ca. 22 cm).

A guy with a bigger build can go for a regular or relaxed fit with a leg opening of about 8.5 to 10 inches (ca. 25 cm).

These are just some reference ranges; you may fall slightly outside of them.

To measure the leg opening, lay your trousers flat and measure straight across the bottom of the leg.

Double this measurement to get the full circumference.

For example, if the flat measurement is 8 inches, the full leg opening is 16 inches.

For me, I noticed that I look better in trousers with a leg opening of 8.5 inches compared to ones with 8 inches or less.

This has been a pretty recent realization, so most of my trousers are still a bit too slim.

How foot size influences trouser width

So far we spoke about your body shape. Let’s go over how the size of your feet influences trouser width as well.

Similar to your body, the bigger your shoes in relation to your body, the wider your trousers can be; and the smaller your shoes, the slimmer they can be.

The classic rule used to be that your trousers should cover between 1/2 – 3/4 of your shoes.

But I think between 1/3 to 60% of your shoes works better for most people.

In my opinion, the sweet spot for 99% of men would be about 1/2 of your shoes.

But if you’re a slim guy, or you have small feet, 1/3 can still work as well.

Less than that, and your shoes start to look gigantic.

More than 60%, and your trousers start to swallow your shoes.

And keep in mind that you want your entire outfit to be coherent. So if you go for wider trousers, match this on your upper body as well. Don’t wear a tight shirt or suit jacket with wide trousers.

A good idea is to go to a store where they have a variety of trouser fits and just try out a few of them to figure out which ones you think look best on you; then you can note down the leg opening width.

Pant length – 5 trouser breaks

Now that we covered trouser width, let’s take a look at the right length for your trousers.

This depends primarily on your personal preference and on the types of trousers, so I want to show you five different trouser breaks and let you decide which one you like the most.

And keep in mind that if you find trousers that fit you well, but they are a bit too long, you can always bring them to the tailor for alterations.

Full Break

First, we have the full break.

This is the most classic version, which is not that common anymore.

With the full break, you have quite a bit of fabric buildup at the bottom.

If you enjoy a more classic look and wider trousers, this may be the right choice for you.

Just make sure not to have too much fabric bending; otherwise it starts to look a bit disorganized.

Half Break

Next up, we have the half break.

This is a more subtle option than the full break and is quite versatile because it works well with various trouser fits and occasions.

It’s suitable both in the office with more formal looks but also with casual trousers.

Quarter Break

The line between a half break and a quarter break is pretty subtle.

You will see just a tiny bend in the fabric here, which makes it look more modern and clean.

This may be the ideal trouser break in my opinion because it doesn’t expose too much of your socks and ankle when you’re walking.

No Break

With no break, your pants just barely touch the top of your shoes without any bend in the fabric.

This creates a clean, straight line which is very pleasing and modern.

Especially with cuffed trousers, this can create a beautiful, clean drape.

Keep in mind that though that the type of shoes you wear also plays a role here.

If your pants don’t have a break when wearing loafers, you may have a slight break on other shoes like oxfords or boots.

And remember that trouser length can affect how your body proportions are perceived.

Shorter men may benefit from a slight or no break to appear taller, while taller men can afford a fuller break.

Ankle Length

This is the most modern approach; however, I must admit I am not a big fan of this look.

Especially if you have larger feet or a bigger midsection; I highly recommend avoiding this style.

In those cases, it can make your shoes look gigantic and disturb the overall balance of your outfit.

But how do you feel about the ankle look?

Fall is just around the corner, and it’s the perfect time to update your wardrobe with essentials that will have you looking sharp and staying warm this season. I’ve narrowed it down to seven must-have items that will keep you both stylish and comfortable as the temperatures start to drop. Let’s explore these fall essentials that every classy man should consider adding to his wardrobe.

The Classic Trench Coat

The trench coat is a timeless piece that’s ideal for fall weather. There’s only a short window each year when you can comfortably wear a trench coat – too hot for summer and too cold for winter, making fall and early spring the perfect seasons for this versatile garment.

Finding the Perfect Trench Coat

If you’re looking to add a trench coat to your wardrobe, consider these options:

Second-hand market: You can find beautiful pieces for up to 80% off their retail price. I recently picked up a London Fog trench coat, made in America, for just 25 Euros on Vinted.

Vintage options: Look for a vintage trench coat, perhaps even a classic Burberry. These tend to be of higher quality and longer than most modern coats.

Budget-friendly: Gutteridge offers some good options at a more affordable price point.

Luxury investment: If budget isn’t a concern, Private White V.C. produces exceptional trench coats that should last a very long time.

When choosing a trench coat, opt for one with a removable inner lining. This feature allows you to adapt to both warmer and cooler fall days. As for colors, classic cream is always a safe bet, but navy, brown, or green can also work well.

The form can be filled in the actual website url.

Corduroy Trousers

Corduroy is a fabric that’s synonymous with fall. It’s comfortable, cozy, and adds texture to your outfit. The ridges on corduroy, called wales, can vary in width. As a general rule, thinner wales create a more modern and dressy look, while wider wales appear more classic and casual.

Choosing the Right Corduroy Trousers

For a versatile option, consider beige corduroy trousers with narrow wales. These can serve as an excellent alternative to chinos during fall.

Brown corduroy trousers are another great choice that fits the season perfectly.

Other fall-appropriate colors include deep green, khaki, black, and burgundy.

While flannel trousers are another excellent option for cooler weather, they’re better suited for winter wardrobes.

Wax Jackets

The Barbour wax jacket is an absolute classic in menswear and should be a staple in any man’s wardrobe. This jacket stands the test of time, looking great regardless of changing trends and fashions. It’s one of the best investments you can make for your wardrobe.

Why Choose a Barbour Wax Jacket

Durability: With proper care, a Barbour wax jacket can last for many years.

Character: As you rewax the jacket, it develops a unique patina, giving it an interesting look and character.

Versatility: Many Barbour jackets offer the option to add extra liners, making them suitable for various weather conditions.

Classic style: The iconic look of a Barbour jacket pairs well with many outfits.

For fall, the classic green or brown versions are perfect. At a reasonable price point, this iconic piece will likely become your go-to jacket for years to come.

Chelsea Boots

When it comes to fall footwear, boots are a natural choice, and Chelsea boots, in particular, are an excellent option. They strike the right balance between elegance and ruggedness, making them incredibly versatile.

Choosing the Right Chelsea Boots

Color: Dark brown is a versatile choice that pairs well with almost anything in your wardrobe.

Quality: For decent quality, expect to spend around $250, though you might find sales bringing the price down to about $180.

Brands to consider: Meermin and Bridlen offer great value for the price.

While chukka boots are another good option for fall, Chelsea boots tend to be more versatile and stylish.

Recommended brands:

Meermin

Bridlen

BLKBRD

Beckett & Simonon (US-only)

Light Turtleneck Sweaters

A turtleneck sweater is a flattering item that looks good on almost everyone. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, turtlenecks are highly functional, essentially acting as a built-in scarf to protect your neck from the cold.

Choosing the Right Turtleneck

Fabric: For fall, opt for a lighter wool fabric, saving chunkier knits for winter.

Color: Mid or dark grey is very versatile, but green, burgundy, shades of brown, cream, or navy are also excellent choices.

Brands to consider: Malloch’s and Bosie specialize in high-quality knitwear and offer a wide range of options.

For men with shorter necks, a mock neck sweater can be a flattering alternative to a full turtleneck.

Flannel Sport Coats

A sport coat in flannel or tweed is perfect for fall, especially in a brown shade. It’s warm, elegant, and the color suits the season while working with almost any skin tone. This versatile piece can be dressed up with formal trousers or dressed down with chinos or jeans.

Choosing the Right Flannel Sport Coat

Color: Brown shades work particularly well for fall.

Pattern: Sport coats with distinct patterns can add interest to your outfit.

Brands to consider: Proper Cloth and Collaro offer some excellent options. Spier & Mackay consistently has great choices at reasonable prices.

A brown flannel sport coat is likely to become one of your favorite items for the fall season, and one you’ll cherish for many years.

Wool scarves

A scarf is an essential fall accessory. Not only does it keep you warm and protect your neck, but it also adds an interesting touch to your outfits. For example, a wool scarf with a herringbone pattern can elevate a simple look significantly.

Choosing the Right Scarf

Material: Wool is an excellent choice for fall scarves.

Pattern: Consider scarves with interesting patterns like herringbone or plaid to add visual interest to your outfits.

Color: While neutral colors are versatile, don’t be afraid to choose a bolder color to make your outfit stand out.

Brands to consider: Spier & Mackay offers a range of scarves with interesting patterns and colors.

Remember, most people tend to dress in black and grey during fall and winter, so adding a pop of color with your scarf can help you stand out from the crowd.

Conclusion

By incorporating these seven fall essentials into your wardrobe, you’ll be well-prepared to face the cooler weather in style. Remember, the key to a great wardrobe is versatility and quality. Invest in pieces that will last and that you can mix and match easily. With these items, you’ll be ready to create numerous stylish outfits throughout the fall season.

Business casual is a pretty ambiguous term, especially in today’s workplace. It’s typically defined as a step-down from classic formal attire, but it can mean a range of things to different companies. However, there are some very common mistakes that guys make – and quite frankly, I made myself in the past, as well.

Let’s address them today, so you can stand out positively at your workplace and impress your future boss.

Mistake 1 – Untucked Shirts

The first mistake is walking around the office with your shirt untucked. This is super common, but it can create a sloppy and unprofessional appearance. Especially when you’re wearing a sport coat or a sweater, always tuck in your shirts.

You don’t want to see your shirt sticking out from underneath your sport coat. Of course, you can wear casual shirts untucked outside the office, but when you’re at work, try to always tuck in your shirts.

Make sure the shirt placket aligns with the fly of your trousers, otherwise it can create a disorganized appearance. When you’re going to the bathroom, just remember to take a quick look in the mirror and check if everything is in order and if not, quickly adjust your shirt, and you will make a great impression at work.

👔 Get custom shirts and save 10% on your first Proper Cloth order → http://bit.ly/pc-lukasschanderl

Ready to upgrade your style?

Receive weekly style tips, outfit ideas and menswear insights.

The form can be filled in the actual website url.

Mistake 2 – Going Sockless

Wearing no show socks may not seem like an obvious mistake, but in conservative firms and industries, it likely is. Especially older gentlemen typically don’t approve of this look, and your boss is probably going to be significantly older than you.

To illustrate this point, here’s a little story. A friend of mine worked in B2B sales, and he told me a story about a manager who would refuse to hire anyone who showed up to the interview without socks (yes, that includes no-show socks, as well). His reasoning was that once hired, they have to meet with C-level managers from respected firms, and those managers won’t approve of this look, and it’s going to make their firm look unprofessional.

Now, you might think that’s a bit harsh, but it’s a good reminder that these small details can really make a difference. Especially in more conservative and competitive industries and firms. So when in doubt, always wear socks and make sure that they have no holes and look clean and professional.

Mistake 3 – The Wrong Fit

The next mistake is wearing clothes that don’t fit you properly. You might have pants that are too long or too tight, or an ill-fitting sport coat.

Now, I get that if you’re applying for your first job after graduation, you probably don’t have a lot of extra money to spend on clothes. But one of the best things you can do is to bring your clothes to an alterations tailor. It’s fairly cheap to shorten trousers or jacket sleeves, but it makes a major difference.

Because wearing clothes that are too tight or too big just look unprofessional. And speaking of the right trouser length, you might have seen a lot of guys wearing shorter trousers in recent years. If you like this look, then I would suggest keeping it for your private wardrobe, but not for the office.

In the office, it’s usually a good idea to stick to a more conservative length, just for good measure. So that means that your trousers should either touch the top of your shoes, which is called no break, or even have a little bit of extra fabric, which would be either a quarter break, a half break or a full break.

Mistake 4 – Dress Sneakers

Another mistake you want to avoid is to wear dress sneakers. These are hybrid shoes between sneakers and dress shoes, and they are pretty common nowadays. But just because something is common, doesn’t make it right.

The truth is that they look a little bit off and are not the professional choice for the office environment. Now full disclosure, I bought these myself before because I did not learn about the right shoes yet, but again I learned my lesson.

Instead of dress sneakers, just go for some leather dress shoes – either oxfords or derbies – and ideally you want to own one pair in dark brown and one in black. Those two shoes are super versatile, and you’re going to look much more professional than your colleagues in their dress sneakers.

If you don’t feel comfortable in leather shoes, you might want to purchase ones with a rubber sole and maybe add a comfortable insole, as well.

Bridlen

Beckett & Simonon (US-only)

Mistake 5 – Too Casual

Another common mistake is wearing clothes that are too casual or too inconsistent. This highly depends on the company, but it could mean wearing sneakers, a t-shirt, jeans or too much jewelry.

Especially if you are starting a new job, it’s always better to be slightly overdressed and to stick to the more formal end of business casual, just to be safe. So that means instead of jeans, you might want to consider wool trousers or chinos.

In my opinion, wool trousers would be the better choice because they are more comfortable, wrinkle resistant and more formal. For shirts, I would stick with either dress shirts or oxford cloth button down shirts. Polo shirts might also be acceptable at some companies, but I would rather stick to the more formal options first.

Mistake 6 – Wrong Belt

The next mistake can ruin an otherwise excellent outfit – wearing the wrong belt.

Don’t wear a thick jeans belt for chinos and dress pants.

Avoid belts that are too casual (as in the picture above)

Go for minimal buckles and avoid those with logos.

Make sure the leather of your shoes and your belt are somewhat matching. They don’t have to be the exact same shade, but wearing a black belt with brown shoes for example just looks off and unprofessional.

Mistake 7 – Low Quality Items

The next mistake is wearing low quality items. Now, I get that you may not have a big budget, but hear me out. Especially with items like a sport coat or shoes, you can really tell the difference between high quality ones and cheap ones.

If you can, I highly recommend you to invest a bit more into a decent pair of shoes and a nice sport coat. But if you’re on a budget, I would look out for sales or, even better, buy some items second hand and then simply bring them to a tailor.

A high quality second hand sport coat for just $30 can look a lot better than a cheaply made one that’s new for $150. You can buy them either online at a local thrift store or in person. The benefit of the first option is that you can try everything, but typically you can find better items online, and they tend to be cheaper as well.

Just take your measurements first and compare them to the item, and in most cases it should be fine.

Conclusion

By avoiding these common business casual mistakes, you’ll be well on your way to making a great impression at work. Remember, it’s always better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed, especially when starting a new job.

Quiet luxury could be described as a subtle and elegant way of dressing, with a focus on high-quality items that aren’t overly flashy. The same logic applies to shoes. You want to look for high-quality, ideally handmade shoes that look elegant but also unassuming.

In my opinion, there are 5 shoes that are essential for this look. You don’t have to get all of them, of course, but if you have at least 2, you can build quite a few outfits with them.

Penny Loafers

I personally love penny loafers. It’s probably the type of shoe I wear the most, and for the quiet luxury look, a pair of dark brown suede loafers would be the best choice.

I think they look more elegant and casual in suede, and dark brown would be the most versatile color that works with (almost) any type of trouser and jacket.

The reason why I recommend going for a classic penny loafer and not horse bit or tassel loafers is simply because this is an essentials list, and nothing beats the penny loafer in terms of versatility.

You can wear it to a summer wedding, for business casual, or in your everyday life, and you will always look fantastic.

A decent pair of penny loafers starts at around $200, and if they are on sale, you can find them for around $150. On the second-hand market, you can find them for even less.

Recommended brands:

Meermin

Bridlen

BLKBRD

Beckett & Simonon (US-only)

Oxfords

In my opinion, every man should have at least 1 pair of dark brown dress shoes, ideally oxfords.

Derbys and oxfords are both great shoes, but if I had to only pick one, I would start with an oxford. In my opinion, oxfords just look more elegant, and I prefer their shape and how they flow over derbys. If they are in a very dark brown color, you can wear them to the office and to almost any formal occasion.

You could also get a pair in dark brown and one in black, but since the quiet luxury look is a bit more of an elevated casual look, black may not be the most essential option.

Similar to the penny loafers, expect to pay at least $200 for a good pair of oxfords, maybe $150 if they are on sale. On the second-hand market, you can find them for around $50.

Boots

I think it’s fair to say that every man looks better in a pair of boots. They are going to be your best friend during winter, spring, and fall and keep your feet dry and warm.

You can choose between chukka boots, Chelsea boots, or dress boots – You can’t go wrong with any of those.

I would recommend opting for dark brown (again) because in fall and winter, when it’s mushy and cold outside, light-colored shoes might not be the most practical choice, especially for an essentials list.

Boots tend to be a bit more expensive than oxfords, so you can expect to pay upwards of $250 for a good pair of boots. Second-hand, they will probably cost you roughly around $80.

Yacht Loafers

If you type in quiet luxury on Pinterest or Instagram, the shoes that you are going to see the most are probably yacht loafers, and for a good reason.

First made famous by Loro Piana, who are calling them summer walk loafers, they look very casual and elegant and are the ideal summer shoe for this look.

Up to this point, all shoes on the list would not be the best choice if you are wearing shorts in summer, but yacht loafers work well with regular trousers and with shorts.

You can also get a bit more creative with the colors with yacht loafers because we tend to be a bit more colorful in summer. So you will see them online in shades of brown, beige, gray, blue, green, or red.

The only thing about yacht loafers is that they usually come with a light-colored rubber sole, which means that eventually, even with regular cleaning, there will come a point where the sole is dirty beyond repair, and you have to buy a new pair of shoes.

Good-year welted loafers, oxfords, and boots can easily be resoled, and even if they have a rubber sole, it’s usually in a dark color so you won’t see the wear and tear that easily.

That’s my only concern with yacht loafers, and also the main reason why I haven’t bought one myself, yet.

They usually start at around $200, but the ones by Loro Piana can cost around $1,000.

Minimal Sneakers

I’ve added minimal sneakers at the end of this list because I know in the menswear scene, there are quite a few guys who believe grown men should not wear shorts under any circumstance.

While I agree that every guy looks better in a pair of regular trousers than in shorts, I also believe that there is a time and place for everything. And if you like wearing shorts in summer, I believe there are no better shoes than minimal sneakers.

You could also go for yacht loafers, but especially on long walks around the city, nothing beats a pair of comfortable sneakers.

Just make sure that they are made from leather or suede, they have no logos, and ideally a thin sole as well, as this will be the most elegant sneaker you can find.

Expect to pay at least $150 for a nice pair of minimal sneakers.

Optional Quiet Luxury Shoes

Espadrilles

Espadrilles are a great casual summer shoe for holidays at the beach. They are usually made from canvas or cotton on the top and with a sole made from rubber or rope. They are lightweight, breathable, and quite comfortable for short walks, but not for long walks on asphalt. Espadrilles are also quite affordable and have this nice, casual summer vibe.

Boat Shoes

Boat shoes are another option for summer, but I do believe that yacht loafers look more elegant and are more versatile because many boat shoes do look quite clunky.

Driving Shoes

Driving shoes can look very elegant in classic styles, but as the name suggests, they are made primarily for driving or for occasions where you won’t walk a lot, such as an evening at a beach resort. The sole is not made for long walks on asphalt, so if you are going on a city trip, I would not bring driving shoes. Therefore, I’ve only included them as optional shoes.

Conclusion

Which of these are your favorite shoes, and what brands do you recommend? Let me know in the comments below.

The ultimate list of quiet luxury brands that every man should know of. Build an elevated, minimal wardrobe full of timeless pieces with the fashion labels below.

Quiet luxury describes a subtle and elegant way of dressing that focuses on materials and craftsmanship instead of flashy labels. Dressing this way can be a lot easier if you know where to look. That’s why I compiled this list of the best quiet luxury brands, which consists of more than 70 brands.

Of course, I cannot list every possible brand on the planet, so please feel free to add more in the comments and I will update the list.

What Does It Take to Be Called a Quiet Luxury Brand?

Requirements:

Minimal designs: Most brands on this list tend to be logo-free and without flashy designs. Minimal does not have to mean boring.

High quality: With the exception of a few more affordable brands that I added, every brand focuses on high-quality materials and production methods.

It’s important to note that there are brands that cater only to the visual aspect of the quiet luxury look, but not the quality (luxury) aspect, but many of us have limited budgets, so I found it important to include them as well. Furthermore, many of the more luxurious brands can easily be found on the second-hand market, which is another affordable way of dressing quiet luxury.
